Well in the book you can actually visualize how the african slaves are being held and kept as slaves. They are seen as slaves and they are very poorly taken care of and some of them even die. That is where people think that the author is racist. Also this also reflects the attitudes of the European imperialism becasue they really did not care about the black people. In showing the state of the slave and the condition that they were kept in you can also see that the Europeans only cared about the growth of the empire.
To me it is really a toss up because I can see where people believe it is racist because, yeah. The black slaves are used and chained up to do maual labor by a coulpe of Europeans and are being suppressed. They no longer have the freedom that they had before. But i see it more as a social commentary becasue if the author was really racist he might use some slurs and even focus more on how bad the black people are and start to talk some more smack about them but he does not do that. He only says what type of state there in and by doing that you see that the Euopeans only care about conquest and taking charge of the other foriegn country.
The book to me is all right i guess. It is not reall as action packed and cool as i thought it would be but it does seem a little okay. The cool thing is that in some parts becasue it is so detailed I can actually play the book out in my head like a movie. A slow paced boring movie but a movie never the less.

I agree with your point of view furry! At first I was thinking that Conrad was racist, but as i read more of your blog, I HAVE to agree with you that if he was really racist, he would've used more slurr's and included more negative comments about Africans.
